Mission Statement
The Camps Bay and Clifton Ratepayers Association (CBCRA) is committed to serving the community by safeguarding the interests and rights of residents and property owners, while conserving the area's natural beauty, character, and heritage. We assist ratepayers with property valuation queries, monitor local events for their impact, and ensure adherence to environmental and heritage laws. As a non-aligned body, the CBCRA promotes civic pride and fosters engagement by facilitating communication between the community and various levels of government.
We also oversee local development to ensure it aligns with the long-term vision of preserving the suburb’s unique aesthetic and residential character. By reviewing planning applications, liaising with developers, and ensuring compliance with zoning and planning laws, the CBCRA acts as a watchdog against inappropriate developments that could undermine property values or the area's heritage. This proactive approach helps maintain a balanced and sustainable growth model that benefits both current residents and future generations.

Our History
Camps Bay, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Twelve Apostles mountain range, has a long and rich history. Originally home to the indigenous Khoi people, who utilised the area's fertile land and coastal resources, the land was later granted to Dutch immigrant Fredrik Ernst von Kamptz in the late 1700s, giving the area its name.
In the 19th century, Camps Bay began its transformation into a popular seaside retreat, particularly after the construction of roads that connected it to Cape Town. By the early 20th century, its natural beauty and beachside charm attracted both local and international visitors, laying the foundation for its rise as a desirable holiday destination.

Popularity and growth
As Camps Bay’s popularity grew, the area saw increased residential development, particularly luxury homes and beachfront properties. The 20th century brought further urbanization, turning Camps Bay into a vibrant suburb of Cape Town. Its iconic beachfront promenade became a symbol of its appeal, as tourists flocked to enjoy the stunning views and attractions.
Despite its growth, Camps Bay has managed to maintain its village charm, a balance that has been key to its continued success as both a residential and tourist hotspot.

Protecting the environment
The CBCRA has played a pivotal role in maintaining this balance, ensuring that development is sustainable and respectful of the environment. The CBCRA has worked extremely diligently to protect green spaces and the coastline, while collaborating with the City of Cape Town on infrastructure improvements like traffic management and public safety.
Additionally, the CBCRA promotes community engagement through local events and supports environmentally friendly initiatives. By preserving the area’s natural beauty and advocating for the needs of residents, the CBCRA has helped Camps Bay retain its unique character while thriving as a world-class destination.
